About the Artist:
Paul is an Interior Architecture & design graduate from Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore and continued with assistance from National Arts Council scholarship to study Technical Theatre in Brisbane Australia. His passion for teaching has become a natural extension of his creativity. As an art and design educator, he has taught visual arts at the Singapore International School in Hong Kong and is currently an adjunct lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic’s school of design in Singapore. Other than teaching students, he also conducts regular urban sketching workshops for the art and geography school teachers in Singapore.

Inspired by his theatre design training, his sketches are often bursting with dramatic colours. His strokes and splashes may look spontaneous but are highly choreographed. Paul’s distinctive style of vivid colours and convoluted details seeks to tell a story behind each sketch. On-location sketching has become his unique way of encapsulating the fast changing urban landscape here in Singapore and around the region.

Paul is an Urban Sketchers’ correspondent for Singapore since 2010 and is currently serving as an advisory board-member for International Urban sketchers organisation.

About the Workshop:
Workshop Objectives:
- To cultivate different ways of seeing through on-location sketching
- To overcome the fear of drawing on paper what we really see (3D landscape to 2D surface)
- To understand the basic principles & techniques of constructing perspectives
- To explore different types of linear perspectives for the purpose of on-location sketching
- To know how to troubleshoot and self-correct perspective drawings
Does perspective drawings scare you? Wondering draw more accurately what you see?

Perspective drawings is one of the essential ways sketchers tell our visual stories. We use our drawings to compress a complex three dimensional urban landscape onto our two dimensional sketchbook. This is a challenging mental process of seeing, thinking and drawing. As a result we can be frustrated with our distorted and wonky drawings.

This 2-session workshop will show you the basics of linear perspective drawings and how to construct them step by step. You will learn different types of perspectives for indoor and outdoor sketching. Learn simple steps and methods to help you overcome the fear of drawing complex scenes. Acquire the knowledge and tools to also help you troubleshoot and self-correct your perspective drawings. The workshop will also include a short on-location practice outside the studio to reinforce the learning.
